Michael Marquardt is an experienced board director with broad and deep experience serving companies with operations throughout Asia, Europe and the United States. The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) has awarded Michael its highest credential of Board Leadership Fellow and has featured him as a speaker on emerging corporate governance and global directorship issues.
During the past 10 years, Michael has served as independent chairman of the Board of Directors of AA International, the international parent of Asia Assistance, based in Kuala Lumpur, and eight other countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region. After the sale of five of the operating entities to insurance giant AXA in April of 2016, Michael was appointed Chairman of the Board of the remaining independent companies, including AA International Indonesia, a healthcare and insurance services provider based in Jakarta. Additionally, he oversees the operations in Taiwan and South Korea. In October of 2016, Michael was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Paris-based industry consortium International Assistance Group (IAG), an organization he has been a board member of since 2009.
Since January of 2011, Michael has served as one of four independent directors on the Board of Commonwealth Trust Company, Delaware’s largest non-deposit trust company with more than $10 billion in assets under administration.
In addition to his board service, as CEO of Global Kompass Strategies, Inc. over the past six years, Michael has served as a global business advisor to corporations in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He works closely with chief executives and senior leadership teams on business development, cybersecurity and strategic planning. He also advises Boards of Directors and Audit Committees on effective risk management measures, corporate governance, geographic expansion, and emerging digital technology issues.
Michael gained extensive expertise in the areas of risk management, corporate governance, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act when former FBI Director Louis J. Freeh asked him to serve as President of his new global risk management firm, Freeh Group International, in early 2008. Applying his entrepreneurial and international business experience, Michael was integral in developing the firm’s early business relationships and engagements with several Fortune 500© and Global 500© corporations. Michael also assisted with the group's strategy and business development efforts in Europe through 2010.
Michael grew up in Berlin and emigrated to the United States soon after witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. He had the opportunity to lead a fast-growing technology company before being recruited to lead a new start-up venture in late 1999. Michael served for seven years as co-founder and chief executive of the health services company MediGuide and led its business development initiatives in the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
Michael holds a Master’s degree from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of New England. He has been a Board Leadership Fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) since 2014. He is also a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).
Following his personal passions, Michael serves on several non-profit boards in the United States, including the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (based in Washington D.C.), where he serves on the Audit Committee, the American Cancer Society’s South Atlantic Division, where he serves as Chairman, and CourseWorld, a New York based online liberal arts education startup. He served on the Board of the Delaware Theatre Company for nine years, including four years as Chairman.

Typically, when Michael is retained as an Advisor, he becomes a quasi-part of the company's executive management team. He participates in some management meetings, travels with company executives, and serves as a sounding board on important strategic decisions that the company is facing.
Michael does not charge for his advice on an hourly or daily basis since he feels that, as an outside Advisor, he should not be compensated more for taking longer to achieve a client's objective. Instead there should be an incentive to achieve tangible results in the shortest possible amount of time. Instead the goals should be aligned and no client should have the perception that "the clock is ticking" when they pick up the phone or send an email to discuss something important to them.
When Michael is engaged by a company, monthly retainer fees typically range from USD 10,000 to USD 50,000, plus pre-authorized travel expense reimbursements. Most clients engage Michael as an Advisor for at least a year, although some projects are designed to be completed within just a few months.
